Spirituality and business: An interdisciplinary overview

The paper gives an interdisciplinary overview of the emerging field of spirituality and business. It uses insights from business ethics, theology, neuroscience, psychology, gender studies, and philosophy to economics, management, organizational science, and banking and refers to different religious convictions including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, the Baha'i faith, and the North-American aboriginal worldview. The authors argue that the materialistic management paradigm has failed. They explore new values for post-materialistic management: frugality, deep ecology, trust, reciprocity, responsibility for future generations, and authenticity. Within this framework profit and growth are no longer ultimate aims but elements in a wider set of values. Similarly, cost-benefit calculations are no longer the essence of management but are part of a broader concept of wisdom in leadership. Spirit-driven businesses require intrinsic motivation for serving the common good and using holistic evaluation schemes for measuring success. El proyecto de una economía personalista

Luk Bouckaert, a Professor at the Catholic University of Louvain, presents in this article the characteristics of what he calls a personalist economy. While there are a number of authors who have supported personalism, there are also attempts of many economists who notexplicitly adopting this name, could be related to this school of thought. This philosophical tradition is essentially based on a vision of the human being as a person, depending on four key assumptions: the recognition of basic needs, the ethical commitment, mutual trustas the basis for the market economy and economic democracy as the touchstone of business ethics.Luk Bouckaert, profesor de la Universidad Católica de Lovaina, presenta en este artículo las características de lo que él denomina una economía personalista. El discernimiento espiritual en la toma de decisiones

The paper tries to demonstrate that spirituality is not a form of "rational altruism" and the choice of spiritually motivated actors cannot be reduced to the logic of "maximizing an altruistic preference". First, it explains that we need spirituality as a method to solve the socalled "divergent problems" which cannot be solved by the rational calculative mind. Then, it explores the modus operandi of spiritual discernment. Hannah Arendt’s lectures on Kant’s Political Philosophy are a guide in this exploration. Finally, the author gives some indications on how this method of moral judgment and spiritual discernment may renew the foundations of business and leadership.El artículo intenta demostrar que la espiritualidad no es una forma de "altruismo racional" y que la elección de los actores espiritualmente motivados no puede reducirse a la lógica de "maximizar una preferencia altruista". En primer lugar, explica que la espiritualidad es necesaria como método para resolver problemas divergentes, que no pueden ser resueltos por la mente racional calculadora. Luego, explora el modus operandi del discernimiento espiritual, tomando como guía  las conferencias de Hannah Arendt sobre la filosofía política de Kant. Por último, el autor ofrece algunas indicaciones acerca del modo en que este método de juicio moral y de discernimiento espiritual puede renovar las bases de la ética empresarial y del liderazgo
